What is the FAA Part 107?
In June 2016 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Part 107 rules and regulations. The FAA Part 107 includes a set of rules for operating drone technology for commercial purposes in the U.S.
If you have a drone that is less than 55 pounds, you can fly for business or work by following the FAA Part 107 guidelines.
There are three main steps to fly under Part 107:
-
- Learn the rules and regulations
- Make sure you know and understand what is not and what is allowed under the 14 CFR Part 107 Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems rules.
- Some drone operations will require a waiver if not covered by Part 107.
- Pass the FAA Knowledge Exam
-
To be eligible to get your Remote Pilot Certificate, you must be:
- At least 16 years old
- Able to read, write, speak, and understand English
- Be in a physical and mental condition to safely fly a UAS
-
- Register your drone with the FAA
- Learn the rules and regulations
All drones must be registered, unless the drone is under 0.55 pounds. Once you register your drone, you will receive an FAA registration certificate which must be present on your persons whenever you fly. You are also required to mark your drone with its registration number before you fly them.
