Analysis Project: Rough Draft

Overview

• This is an activity related to the Analysis of Writing in Your Field Major Writing Project.
• The activity is worth 200 points. I will add the points to your grade after checking your draft.

Goals

• Analyze the rhetorical situation and determine the appropriate audience or users of written communication, considering the needs of global audiences and people with disabilities. [CLO 1]
• Conduct research appropriate to workplace problem solving, such as literature review, evaluation of online resources, interview, and site inspection. [CLO 2]
• Interpret research findings with understanding of ethical and human implications. [CLO 3]
• Apply principles of effective visual design for print and electronic presentation, including hierarchical, chronological, and spatial arrangements. [CLO 6]
• Identify and apply the principles of effective style in the composing of usable, reader-centered written communications. [CLO 7]

The Task

For this Major Writing Project Activity, create a rough draft of your project in Microsoft Word. 

Getting Started

Complete these activities to gather information and prepare to write your draft: 

• Analysis Project: Research Writing in Your Field (50 points)
• Analysis Project: Brainstorm on Workplace Audiences (50 points)

You are not required to complete the activities above, but they can help you prepare your draft.

Composing Your Draft

Create a rough draft of your project in Microsoft Word. Keep the following Project Requirements in mind:

• Create a table in Microsoft Word (other software has limited formatting options).
• Provide a specific title for the document.
• Cover at least 10 different kinds of writing that are typical in your field.
• Use professional design and formatting that increase readability.
• End with documentation for all outside resources you have used.
• Include the following columns in your table:
  • type of writing
  • audience(s)
  • purpose(s)
  • collaborators
  • typical length of the writing
  • required components
  • special features
  • layout/format
  • ethical considerations
  • reference(s) in Markel & Selber
  • personal experience

Requirements

1. Create a table in Microsoft Word with the required column headings. 
2. List at least 10 different kinds of writing in the “type of writing” column of your table.
3. Fill out half (or more) of your table. 
4. Include a working list of your sources after the table in your draft.

Grading Process

I will award the points for this activity after I check your draft and ensure that it meets the basic requirements listed above. Note that your draft need not be complete to earn the points for this activity, but I do expect to see at least half of the project in your draft.

I will not provide individualized editing or revision feedback on rough drafts submitted after 11:59 PM on Thursday, July 11. I will provide everyone with collective feedback that goes over the issues that I see in the drafts all members of the course submit. I may use excerpts from your draft to provide collective feedback to the class, based on the Anonymous Use of Student Texts policy Links to an external site..
