4-H: Afterschool Programming with Children--4-H is the youth development education program of Virginia Cooperative Extension. 4-H is rich with learning experiences where young people partner with caring adults and volunteers in a fellowship unlike any other program available to youth today. Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development.

AARP – Digital Document Creation: A couple of students are needed to assist the Blacksburg Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (Links to an external site.) in preparing plans for a Senior Living Expo in September of 2016. Needs for this project center around a need for an online management system to be developed to organize planning documents, internal communication, and promotion of the event to the broader community.

Blacksburg Children’s Museum: Volunteer Support for Children Exploration--As a learning playground, the Blacksburg Children's Museum is devoted to nurturing the curiosity and creativity of children through the exploration of science, technology, the arts, and regional heritage.

Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation: Students can assist with the following programs.

-Developing school field trips/tours and conducting them
-Event planning (depending on the time of year/what events we have going on)
-Researching grants applicable to our organization and writing/applying for them
-Historic research projects then presenting findings in the form of a talk/presentation, publication or exhibit
-Developing a marketing plan and implementing it
-Docent volunteer coordinating- Recruiting, training and scheduling docents

Boys and Girls Clubs of the New River Valley: Afterschool Program Support--Through our after school programs and summer camps, Boys and Girls Clubs offer young people what they need and want most: adults who respect them, a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves, and interesting, constructive activities that channel their energy into challenging pursuits. All Boys and Girls Clubs programs are based on youth development strategies that build self confidence and self-esteem to foster a sense of belonging, competence, usefulness, and influence.

Campus Kitchens at Virginia Tech:

The Campus Kitchen at Virginia Tech (CKVT) was the 48^th institution to join the national network in September 2015. CKVT is a university-centric program housed in VT Engage: The Community-Learning Collaborative.

Food Recovery

VT Engage partners with VT Dining Services in order to recover quality, surplus food from dining halls. CKVT Food Recovery Teams are sent to D2 Dining Hall and West End Market Monday through Friday. This is a weekly commitment for volunteers. VT Dining Services provides training to volunteers so that they may safely handle and package food in congruence with ServSafe food safety practices to be picked up by the CKVT and community partners each week. As the student volunteer pool for CKVT Food Diversion Teams continue to increase, VT Engage and VT Dining Services will expand into other dining halls by March 2016.

Meal Preparation

VT Engage partners with the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise in order to safely prepare meals for our client agency, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread, once a week. As advised by the Virginia Department of Health, CKVT safely cooks, cools, and stores up to 10-20lbs. of food on-campus in Wallace 405. Although the Virginia Department of Health considers Wallace 405 an “exempted kitchen,” because meals are being prepared in good faith, CKVT operates at ServSafe standards during all cooking shifts. Interested volunteers may sign up for a cooking shift at ckvt.campuskitchens.volunteerhub.com. No training is required.

Meal Delivery

VT Engage partners with VT Dining Services in order to deliver recovered food from dining halls and prepared meals to Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread. No food safety or food handling training is required for volunteers to sign up for a delivery shift. CKVT Delivery Shift Leaders are students that commit to leading volunteers in meal delivery once a week. Delivery Shift Leaders are trained in safe food handling practices and are cleared to drive VT Engage’s assigned state vehicles. Volunteers transport food using CKVT’s insulated carriers that maintain temperatures for up to 3 hours.

Interested volunteers may sign up to deliver meals on ckvt.campuskitchens.volunteerhub.com. No training is required.

Beyond the Meal Projects

VT Engage provides students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to participate in projects with other community partners. CKVT Project Leaders are students who commit to leading volunteers in service projects at the Giving Tree Food Pantry or Micah’s Backpack once a week, and they are cleared to drive VT Engage’s assigned state vehicles. Beyond the Meal Projects also include on-campus service events hosted by the CKVT Leadership Team. Interested volunteers may sign up on ckvt.campuskitchens.volunteerhub.com. No training is required.

Floyd County Humane Society: Assistance with PetSmart Adoption Program--Cat care at PetSmart (cleaning cages and playing with cats), dog adoption days at PetSmart, assisting members with walking dogs and assisting adopters with the application process.

Fun 143 at Blacksburg Estates Mobile Home Park: Afterschool Program Assistance--Blacksburg United Methodist Church has worked in the Blacksburg Estates Community for the past several years. Volunteers from the congregation provide tutoring services to the children of the community. They also offer transportation to church, school, sports, and community events and activities, as well as a summer enrichment program. In addition, they host a number of special events designed to bring the entire community together.

Language and Culture Institute (LCI) - conversation partner program - The Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute provides language-related programs and services for academic and professional development. Through its work, the institute contributed to the university's diversity and intellectual capacity by helping to attract the best and brightest international students, scholars, and professionals to the community. Part of Virginia Tech Outreach and International Affairs, the institute has locations in Blacksburg at the main VT campus, the National Capital Region, and Radford University.

Linden Green After School Program: Afterschool program assistance at a low-income housing complex. The after school program will be held twice a week and start as soon as the kids get off the bus at 3:45pm and end by 5:30pm. The program will provide a snack, after school physical activity/energy release, and homework help. Linden Green is located in Christiansburg near the 460 bypass and is a low income housing property for families. The property has over 50 school aged children but the after school program hopes to serve approximately 20 children a week. The after school program will also provide an opportunity for the children to discuss their school day as well as their home life so the Resident Services Department of Linden Green can focis on the needs of the children and being their advocate.

Montgomery County RSVP: the Retired Senior Volunteer Program engages senior adults in a variety of service projects in the area. Students can work along side these seniors by helping with trail cleanup, visits to area care facilities, and other community projects.

SEEDS Blacksburg Nature Center: Youth Environment Program Assistance--Founded in 1995, SEEDS has a mission to inspire a natural curiosity and love for the environment in children and the young at heard through discovery learning, nature education, teacher support, and civic awareness.

Special Olympics: Unified sports participation on weeknights--Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a saying of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

YMCA Programs at Virginia Tech: Interested in volunteer work or just looking to get more involved? The YMCA at Virginia Tech's Student Programs has excellent opportunities for students to reach out and leave a lasting impact. Since 1873, the YMCA has helped Virginia Tech students to bridge the gap between campus and community. The YMCA Student PRograms were founded in 1989 as a registered student organization supporting the Y's efforts through student leadership.
