Course Books

All readings are to be read in advance of the class under which they are listed. All readings must be brought to class for discussion purposes. Students are expected to acquire two course books:

Elliott N. Dorff, To Do the Right and the Good: A Jewish Approach to Modern Social Ethics (2004).

Jewish Publication Society (JPS), Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures (1985).

All other readings are available on Canvas. Online readings must be printed and brought to class.

A course packet is available from the University Bookstore that contains about half of the readings posted to Canvas. Purchasing the course packet is optional. Bringing printed copies of the readings is required, whether they are printed from Canvas or in the course packet.

Prepare for class by reading your printed copies of articles and excerpts rather than reading them online. As many studies Links to an external site. demonstrate, reading comprehension of printed material is generally better than reading comprehension of digital texts. You are strongly encouraged to write on the texts! Engage in active reading Links to an external site. by underlining or highlighting and making annotations of the texts. (Use sticky notes if you prefer not to write in a book.)
