Kentland Farm
Faculty, students, and Virginia Tech affiliates looking for a rural testing environment that is relatively close to campus may wish to fly at the Kentland Farms flight test area and Kentland Experimental Aerial Systems (KEAS). This area contains a 300-foot paved runway which supports flight operations.
Those who wish to fly at Kentland Farms are required to review and comply with the Kentland Farms UAS Protocol:
Other requirements for flying at this location include:
- Part 107A Remote Pilot Certificate
- Exception if an operation relating to coursework or research in which the operator is directly supervised by a Part 107-certified pilot
- Virginia Tech UAS Training course
- Signed acknowledgement of the KEAS Laboratory safety protocols on record with the UAS Safety office (for those needing access to the KEAS Lab)
- Aircraft must be registered with VT Risk Management
Any individuals flying at Kentland Farm must also gain access to the KEAS website and calendar, which helps UAS operators flying at Kentland Farm deconflict among each other. Contact Craig Woolsey for access.
Once you have access to the KEAS Calendar remember to schedule your flight activity in advance. Include:
(A) Name, cell phone number, and email for the Activity Leader who will be present.
(B) Name, cell phone number, and email for the Responsible Faculty Member.
(C) Details concerning the planned activity (nature, location, number of participants, spectrum usage, etc.)
Also send a broadcast e-mail to the entire distribution list announcing your scheduled activity.
It is your responsibility to deconflict with other operations, and to update the calendar if your flight plan changes.
