What If You Want To Fly at Virginia Tech?
The VT Drone Park |
There are no special certifications or trainings required to fly at the Virginia Tech Drone Park! Just send an email to VTdronepark@vt.edu, review a quick safety brief, and show up ready to learn and have fun! If you don't have a drone or have never flown before, don't worry, Drone Park experts can provide you with flight training on one of our facility-managed aircraft.

Outside of the Drone Cage |
If you want to fly on Virginia Tech property outside of the Drone Park, there are steps you will need to take in order to gain approval to fly on these properties, or fly a VT-owned drone outside of the Drone Park.
Step 1: Get your FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot's License from the FAA. (more info can be found in the FAA Part 107 Resource Module)
Step 2: Register your aircraft with the FAA.
Step 3: Take the Virginia Tech UAS Training. This includes the online portion taken on this canvas site, and an in-person portion to ensure you understand the rules and are able to fly safely.
Step 4: Follow the protocols outlined on the VT UAS Policy website based on where and how your are operating your drone.
Step 5: Have fun and fly safe!
