Welcome

If you have read any news in Higher Ed over the last few weeks, you may have seen the term “Instructional Designer” used more than once. In this “pivot” to Emergency Remote Teaching due to COVID19,  much discussion has been made over the help some Universities have received from a group of professionals known as “Instructional Designers” (ID).

The name seems straight forward in its meaningthose who design instruction. But, like many professions that include the word “Design”there is more to it than meets the eye.

Those in the field of Instructional Design and Technology study how people learn and are dedicated to improving the learning experience through the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning and performance support products, processes, and environments. ID's practice their unique, multidisciplinary profession in a variety of settings including industry, pre-K-12 schools, higher education, and government.

Students of Instructional Design begin to learn the techniques surrounding the design process using design models that describe a systematic approach to the design process. Models are created to simplify and conceptualize the complex process of designing for learning and instruction. Models are often used as operational and communication tools within design teams.

Our VT IDT Team, composed of VT Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) graduate students,  collaborated this semester with Redshift Education to design and develop Introductory and Instructional material for their future clients. Redshift Education designs VR experiences for students of World Language classrooms.

To approach this project, the IDT Team used the ADDIE Model as an Instructional Design process.  Each phase of ADDIE describes the flow of our process used to design and develop four prototypes for our client.
