This paper should demonstrate your understanding of material from the first part of the course. In terms of textbook chapters, that means 5-8.
The people who grade this paper will be asking themselves whether the paper:
- Explains relevant course material.
- Includes relevant examples from outside the assigned course materials.
- Provides links between the course material and the outside examples: it should be clear how the example illustrates the material.
- Follows the prof's criteria for written assignments.
Talking of guidelines, here is a guideline for the length of this paper: 3 pages. (The more general prof's criteria tell you that this means single-spaced pages.) That is a guideline, rather than an upper or lower limit.
