Note taking Methods-2

One of the most popular ways of taking notes is the Cornell Method. Let's first take a look at what that is, and then consider how we can adapt it to our web vs outline way of taking notes (remember- whether the bedroom was a fixed picture or you were looking around it).

If you find yourself having two sets of notes on the same topics (one from the readings and one from the lecture), there is one addition you can make to the Cornell Method. This, however, depends on the professor. Some just repeat the information you read and add in some more detail, and others present new information. For those who are just repeating, you can consider turning your paper sideways (landscape) and adding one more column on the right. Leave that column to take notes in lecture, just adding information that is new from what you already have written down from your readings notes.

Now, let's break down the note taking style based on your personal learning style:

  • Remember, color or black and white.
  • Refer to your learning style page if you need a refresher on how to review the notes once they've been taken

Outline Notes (fixed picture of bedroom)

Outline notes are largely what you see in the video. Information is written from top of the page to the bottom based on the order in which the information is given. It can be organized in bullet points that provide more information on a topic, or numbers if something can be enumerated. Indents, arrows, and underlining all help the organization in this outline form.

Web Notes (you are looking around your bedroom in your mind)

Webbed notes can be most closely compared to mind mapping in the way that the ideas are grouped/clustered. It visually shows the relationship between the information. You can still follow the basic columns provided in the Cornell Method, but what you put in the right column would be different, and you would benefit from using printer paper instead of lined paper. Let's look at how outline vs web notes compare:
