Kaltura Exercises
In the following exercises, you'll gain some experience using Kaltura. Note that Kaltura for instructors differs from Kaltura for students. It’s good to be aware of this difference so that you consult the appropriate learning guide, and avoid materials designed for instructors.
My Media vs. Media Gallery
Go to 4Help Video Content Management for Students and read the section entitled Background on My Media and Media Gallery. As you read this, think about the following question: What are the major differences between My Media and Media Gallery?
Record a Video
We would like you to record a brief 5-15 second video that includes audio of a short sentence in English. It's important to include this because we'll use that to later test out Kaltura's captioning. Here are some notes about this video:
- You do not need to use your webcam to record unless you would like to. A screen capture or any other visual will suffice.
- If you would prefer not to record your own voice, you may try using this voice generator Links to an external site..
- You have the option of recording the video either through Zoom or Kaltura Capture. The choice is up to you.
Recording via Zoom
To record a video through Zoom, you'll need to start a New Meeting. When you're ready, you may click Record and select Record to the cloud. This means your recording will automatically upload to My Media in Kaltura when you're finished. When you're finished recording, you may hit the square Stop button and leave the meeting.
Recording via Kaltura Capture
Go to 4Help Video Content Management for Students, go to Adding Videos and then click on Creating Videos with Kaltura Capture. Please follow the steps to download the software. Then, record your video. The video will be stored in My Media.
Add Captions
Now that you've recorded your video, you can view your video by visiting My Media (Personal) in the practice Canvas course. Click on the title of your video to take a closer look.
Before you request captions, this is the ideal time to make any edits. To do so, click Actions under the video player and then select Launch Editor. Once you've ordered captions, you should not make any further edits as this will disrupt the timing of the captions.
To order captions, click Actions and then + Caption & Enrich. This will open a new page. Under Order Captions & Enrichment Services, select the following settings:
- Service: Machine
- Source Media Language: English
- Feature: Captions
Then hit Submit. It may take some time for the ordered captions to be added to your video. You should receive an email when captions have been added.
However, the machine-generated captions may not be 100% accurate. To correct any errors, click on Actions > + Caption & Enrich > Pencil icon under Existing Requests. This should open the Closed Captions Editor, which you may use to adjust the wording and timing of your captions.
Upload a Video to the Media Gallery
- Next, we want to add the recorded video to the Media Gallery in our practice Canvas course. In the 4Help guide, go to Publishing Videos and follow the instructions. Doing so will allow everyone in the course to have access to the video.
- Next, revisit the Sample Page you created as part of your module in the practice Canvas course. Click the Edit button in the top right and once the editor is open, look for a blue V-shaped icon. Click this and then select Embed Kaltura Media. Find and check your video from the course Media Gallery. Then Save the page.
