Canvas Exercises: (Part 2 of 2)

Create a Quiz

  • The next item we want to add to our module is a quiz. Still in the Pamplin Engage Practice Course, click Modules on the left-hand sidebar, find your module, and click [+]. Select Quiz from the dropdown and then [New Quiz].

  • Title your quiz “Quiz - Your Last Name” (ie. "Quiz - Schwarzenegger") and click Add Item. Then click on your quiz to open it. 

  • Click the Edit button in the top right. In the textbox, add the following text: “This quiz consists of 5 questions on Virginia Tech. It is not timed. You can take the quiz up to 2 times.”

  • Scroll down to the quiz settings. Input the following settings:
    • For Quiz Type, select “Graded Quiz.”
    • For Assignment Group select "Quizzes."
    • Check "Allow Multiple Attempts", and input “2” for the number of attempts. 
    • Check "Let Students See Their Quiz Responses" and "Let Students See the Correct Answers.

  • Next, click on the Questions tab toward the top of the page. Then click Add Question. Recreate the following question:

            • Who was the first student at Virginia Tech?
              • Tim Sands
              • William Linkous
              • Addison Caldwell
              • Gilbert Blythe
     
  • To recreate this question, type the question into the main textbox. Then, type each answer option into the smaller textboxes below. You made to click "Add Another Answer" to generate 4 spots.

  • At the top of the question, make sure you have Multiple Choice selected and give the question a point value of 2. You may leave “Question” as is. When all the questions are in place, Canvas will automatically number the questions.

  • The boxes with an ellipsis in the middle [...] are feedback boxes. There are two types of feedback boxes:
    • Specific Feedback Boxes are placed after each answer option. They provide specific feedback for each particular answer.
    • General Feedback Boxes are placed all the way at the bottom. They provide general feedback for all answers of a certain type. There are three types of General Feedback Boxes:
      • The green box on the left allows you to input feedback for all correct answers.
      • The red box in the middle allows you to input feedback for all incorrect answers.
      • The blue box on the right allows you to input feedback for all answers.

  • In the general feedback green box, enter the following text: “That's right! Addison "Add" Caldwell was the first student at Virginia Tech in 1872. He walked 26 miles from Craig County to enroll.” 

  • In the general feedback red box, enter the following text: “Hint: The first student's nickname was "Add."”

  • Click Update question. Then click Save. If you need to edit a quiz, be sure to always hit Update Question after editing a given question. If you only hit Save, your edits will be lost.

  • Next, we’re going to add some pre-made questions from a question bank. Toward the bottom of the quiz, you should see three buttons with the right-most one labeled Find Questions. Click that to open a pop-up window. 

  • Then, ensure the question bank VT Questions is selected. Click Select All and then Add Questions.

    The quiz question bank VT Questions is selected as well as all 4 questions in it.
  • Save & Publish the quiz. Then click on the pair of glasses in the top right corner to access Student View. This will allow you to see how the quiz appears when taken. Answer the questions and Submit Quiz. You should be able to see the feedback responses for Q1 appear!
