Zoom Whiteboard
Overview
The Whiteboard feature in Zoom gives you a space to help illustrate during your lecture. This tool can be used synchronously or during your recorded lecture. The whiteboard feature can be used to:
- Art
- Illustrate a concept
- Brainstorm ideas
- Write out complicated formulas
- Architecture
- Draw out formulas
The whiteboard can also be downloaded as an image and then uploaded into Canvas to share with students so they have a copy.
Accessing the Whiteboard
The Zoom whiteboard feature can be found when you launch a Zoom meeting in the Share option in your interface navigation bar.

If you do not see the whiteboard option when you click your screen share tool, you may need to enable it in your account settings.

- Go to: virginiatech.zoom.us Links to an external site.and sign-in to your account.
- Select settings in the left-hand navigation.
- Scroll down to Whiteboard (or control search whiteboard).
- Click the Enable toggle.
- If you want students to be able to annotate your whiteboard, click enable Annotation (during the session you can turn annotate on and off).
Using the Whiteboard
Once you start your Zoom meeting and have enabled whiteboard and annotate (if desired), you can open up the whiteboard:
- Click the Share Screen button located in your meeting tool bar.
- Click Whiteboard
- Click Share
- The whiteboard Annotate toolbar will appear in your toolbar.

If you close the whiteboard toolbar, you can access whiteboard again by clicking the Whiteboard option in your meeting toolbar.

Best Practices
- Use the whiteboard to illustrate a concept or formula.
- Facilitate brainstorming session.
- Share the whiteboard image with students by downloading it and sharing it in Canvas content.
- Encourage students to use the whiteboard in their collaborative groups.
- Allow students to add to your whiteboard via the annotation feature Links to an external site..
