Asynchronous Guest Speakers
Overview
You can still have a guest speaker present to your class without having to be synchronous. Connect with a guest speaker to discuss your class what topics the class has been engaged with, and discuss logistics such as: how to send the recorded video to you, how the recording will be used, and if you plan on having students submit questions for them to answer. The guest speaker recording could be uploaded into a discussion board topic for students to comment and discuss.
Using the Canvas Discussion Board
The Canvas discussion board can be used in a variety of purposes. You can pose questions and have students answer, post a video and have students reflect, for peer review assignments, reply to each other's posts, share resources, share ideas, debate an issue, discuss case studies, problem solve, and more.
You can create graded discussions and make group discussions. The video below will show you how to create a discussion in Canvas

Best Practices
- Keep open and consistent lines of communication open between you and the guest speaker.
- Develop a plan with the guest speaker including a timeline and getting them any questions to them prior to recording.
- Offer assistance if they need suggestions with recording.
- Explain how the video will be used and how it will be accessed
- You can use the course discussion board to post the video and have students engage in an asynchronous discussion/reflection of the guest speaker's presentation.
