Asynchronous Lecturing via Kaltura
Overview
Asynchronous learning allows students to have more flexibility deciding when and where they choose to view and engage with course content. You can have a lecture asynchronously by creating a video of the lecture and uploading it into the Canvas My Media tool. Kaltura video capture allows you to record videos and upload them into Canvas where it can be published and shared in your content.
When creating a recorded lecture, you can create a follow-up activity such as: a quiz, discussion board post, blog, reading, assignment, or have them comment on the video post. You can also create playlists of videos and embed them into the Canvas Rich Content Editor.

Best Practices
- Draft a script or outline your ideas
- Collect everything you need: slides, supplemental docs, computer, headphones, microphone, computer charger, etc.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Are you in a quiet environment?
- Use headphones and microphone that minimize background noise.
- Try to keep recorded videos short (10 minutes or less) or chunk them into 10 minute segments if needed. This helps students focus and be less susceptible to distractions.
- Upload supplemental materials that support the video.
- Create playlists to chunk videos both lecture and outside videos.
- Create activities that let students practice or demonstrate their understanding of the video (e.g., discussion boards, assignments, quizzes).
