Synchronous / Asynchronous Assessment: Quizzes

Overview

The Canvas Quizzes tool allows you to create quizzes and surveys using a variety of different question types. You can create question banks to store and reuse questions and offers several settings to help secure your quiz to promote academic integrity among students.

Short frequent quizzes can inform the instructor and student of the student's progress. When you create multiple-choice, T/F, or multiple answer quiz types, SpeedGrader will grade them automatically, saving time. Using short answer questions allows you to provide more tailored feedback and can test for deeper understanding and application of information.

Best Practices

  • Use quizzes to conduct knowledge checks
  • Moderate a quiz to allow for students who may require academic accommodation. This will allow you to give extra time (on a timed quiz) or extra attempts.
  • Time your quiz to reduce potential cheating behavior.
  • Build question banks if you plan on reusing questions. They can be easier to access if they are in banks. Note: if you update a quiz question that is pulled from a bank, it won't update in the bank itself.
  • There are several ways to make your quiz more secure, please visit this Canvas guide Links to an external site. to learn more.
  • Build in automatic feedback for correct and incorrect quiz responses. This can immediately help students with misunderstandings.
