Recording Lectures on Your Computer

Overview

TLOS recommends you use Kaltura Capture to record your lectures. Kaltura Capture can record video of you from your webcam, audio, and whatever you're presenting on your screen. So, you can record a PowerPoint slideshow alongside yourself speaking. Kaltura Capture syncs your recordings with your My Media tool in Canvas, from which you can publish them to your site's Media Gallery.

Think Best Practices

  • Chunk your lecture into 10-minute sections.
  • Plan relevant student activities after each video. 
  • Collect everything you need: slides, supplemental docs, computer, headphones, microphone, computer charger, etc. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Are you in a quiet environment? 
  • You don't have to be perfect! We're going online FAST, so do what you can.

 

Downloading Kaltura Capture & Connect It to My Media

  1. Log into Canvas. In any course, click My Media.
  2. In My Media click Add New -> Kaltura Capture.
  3. Under Using Kaltura Capture for the first time? Click your operating system and follow the prompts to download the Kaltura Capture desktop software.
  4. After installation, repeat steps 1 and 2 to sync Kaltura Capture on your computer with My Media in Canvas.

Record Lectures on Your Computer

  1. Start Kaltura Capture from My Media: in My Media click Add New → Kaltura Capture.
  2. Choose which screens / webcam to record video. If you choose a monitor, record full screen or a selected area. 
  3. Click the record button. You’ll get a 3-sec countdown before recording starts. 
  4. Click the pause icon to take a break. Click the stop icon when you’re done. 
  5. When you stop recording, the video entry window will appear. Enter a unique video Title and Description and click Save & Upload.

 

 

Edit Lectures

  1. Go to My Media in any Canvas course. Next to the video, click the pencil/edit icon. 
  2. On the Edit page, make sure it has a unique Name and Description
  3. To edit the video, click Launch Editor and use the snip and split tools. For details, go to: https://knowledge.kaltura.com/help/kaltura-video-editing-tools---user-guide Links to an external site.
  4. Links to an external site.When you’re done, click Save a Copy. It’s always a good idea to keep the original!

 

Add Captions

  1. Go to My Media in any Canvas course. Next to the edited video, click the pencil/edit icon. 
  2. On the Edit page, click Actions  → + Order Captions.
     
  3. Under Fidelity, choose Mechanical (voice recognition) and click Order Captions. A confirmation message will appear.
  4. Check caption order status by clicking Actions -> Caption Requests and refreshing the Caption Requests area.
  5. Anyone watching the video can see captions by clicking [CC].

Publish in Your Canvas Site

  1. Go to the Media Gallery of the site where you want to publish the lectures. 
  2. Click + Add Media.
     
  3. On the Add Media page in the My Media tab, check the box next to the lecture videos you want to publish, then click Publish.
     

If you see the message, “You cannot publish entry [video name]. Please fill the required fields first,” you haven’t entered text for the video description. Go to the Edit Video page, enter a description, then publish the video.

 

Check Viewership Analytics

  1. In the Media Gallery, click the settings icon in the top right corner → Analytics.
     
  2. Click the Engagement tab to see a list of students and video interactions.
  3. Click Load More and the arrows next to student names to show details. You can download separate media viewing reports for each student and media item by clicking the save file or printer icons.
